Description
Anodesyn ointment and suppositories contain lidocaine hydrochloride (previously known as lignocaine hydrochloride in the UK) and allantoin.
Lidocaine is a local anaesthetic that works by temporarily blocking the pathway of pain messages along nerve fibres. This allows relief from pain where the medicine has been applied.
Allantoin acts as an astringent to cause the cells that it comes into contact with to shrink and dry out. This causes shrinkage of the haemorrhoid, thereby relieving the associated pain and discomfort.
Haemorrhoids occur when veins in the wall of the rectum become swollen and irritated and may cause irritation and pain on passing stools. This preparation is used to relieve the symptoms of anal irritation associated with haemorrhoids.
